Front Yard Landscaping Pt. 1

2015

we bought our first home!

After purchasing our home, we immediately got to work on redesigning the front yard. We weren’t a fan of the huge lawn. Not having a lawn mower, and after paying the first month’s water bill we decided to rip out most of the grass.

We decided to go draught tolerant to save ourselves the maintenance and high cost of a regular lawn.

We already had to cut down and dug up the large liquid amber tree that was planted out front. The tree was beautiful and about twenty years old, unfortunately it had invasive roots that had already started causing damage to our water lines, so it had to go.

plotting out where to start the new landscape

We decided to keep a little patch of grass in the front for our dog to still have an area to play.

2016

we dug up the lawn, and removed the remaining roots from the tree. it was a lot more work than we anticipated it would be.

2017

then, Months went by until March 2017 we finally purchased succulents to start planting.

2018

Later in August 2018 we hired a landscaper to lay down concrete pavers with Mexican beach stone for our front walkway.

I definitely recommend doing your research and talking with your local nurseries. We made the mistake of not researching how big these succulents can grow to be. We were only focused on the present moment, not the future. And some of the succulents we purchased we’re expected to continue to keep growing larger than we wanted. Don’t repeat our mistake if you can.

We also made mistakes & had to replant a few

We wanted to create a walk way from the side walk to our front door, so guests wouldn’t feel compelled to walk up our drive way. Unfortunately, the plants right next to our walk way were expected to double in size. Since they also had thorns and would over grow into the walk way it was too dangerous to keep them. So we had to pull them out and replace them.

2019

Then in May 2019 we decided to change it up and added some poppies and greenery into the landscape. It also meant another trip to pickup some ground cover.

I was also 8 months pregnant at the time.

Finally we finished!
