Choosing a Convertible Car Seat

Why I picked the nuna rava

Picking out a convertible car seat was not easy.

It’s a big investment, depending on the brand and features you’re looking for. I spent a few days researching. I researched online and watched reviews from brands like Graco, Britax, and Maxi Cosi.

We loved his UppaBaby Mesa seat. It was so easy to install the bases in both our cars and the quality of the car seat was worth the price. I would have loved to stay with the UppaBaby brand, but unfortunately, the UppaBaby Knox car seats had been recalled this year.

With Julian being 10 months old and already a whopping 25 pounds and 32 inches tall it was high time we got him new car seat! He can no longer sit comfortably and would cry every time we tried to load him into the car

In hindsight, I wish I had started looking for a new car seat when he was 6 months old. But I didn’t think he would grow so fast!

To be honest, I already miss the days of bringing the infant car seat into restaurants with our sleeping babe all cozy inside. Maybe I was reluctant to admit I no longer have a baby anymore.

Car seat criteria that we wanted:

  • Safety

  • Easy installation

  • Machine washable cover

  • Good fabric ventilation

  • will grow with babe

the Nuna Rava car seat

After doing some research, we decided to go with the Nuna Rava. The Maxi Cosi and the Britax Boulevard Click Tight were great contenders. But I loved how the Nuna Rava checked off all our boxes. It’s similar to the UppaBaby, with the design of the seat being functional, high quality, and stylish. I also loved how every reviewer mentioned how easy it is to install, with the preferred installation method being your vehicle’s seat belt. This was important for us, because Colin and I will be transferring the seat from one car to the other throughout the week. I also loved that it had built-in cup holders and harness pockets to keep the straps out of the way, while loading and unloading your babe.

Details:

  • Price: $480

  • 19” wide x 16” long x 25” high

  • Rear facing 5-50 lbs. height of 49” or less

  • Forward facing 25-65 lbs. height of 49” or less (most kids will reach this height by age six)

PROS:

  • Easy installation using vehicle’s seatbelt, great for transferring between cars

  • All steel frame and side impact protection

  • Great ventilation, perfect for our little guy who gets sweaty

  • Length doesn’t hinder tall parents who will sit in front of the car seat

  • Machine washable seat covers

  • Built in cup holders

  • Adjustable headrest

  • Extended rear facing with additional 2-inch leg room

  • Harness pockets for keeping the safety straps to the side while loading and unloading

  • 10-position recline

  • Fabric is free of fire-retardant chemicals

CONS:

  • It’s pretty heavy at 27.25 pounds, not ideal for traveling

  • 65 pounds is the max weight, not sure how many years we will be able to use the seat with Julian growing so fast

  • Not all in one, would have to eventually buy a booster later

We’re getting the Nuna Rava seat in next week. I’ll be writing a follow up article on how our experience has been in the weeks to follow!
